Social Media Outlets

I’ve never consistently had my own Twitter account and I’m not too familiar with it but I’m intrigued by the outlet. Many businesses and organizations use this media tool to target audiences and spread news and promotions to their users.  I’ve already found many interesting links, articles and users to “Follow” through this site!  Here is a link to my account:https://twitter.com/rkearney15

Facebook is a networking site that is used for a variety of purposes: family and friend connections, media viewership and advertising for businesses.  I am adding to my profile to better my own career in the writing field. I’m learning how to best incorporate my professional writing skills and tools to my personal profile so that I can be equated with the work that I do through media writing. https://www.facebook.com/NewEnglandsBest15

Blogs are highly successful tools for networking with clients, businesses and target audiences. I have never used a Tumblr blog account before but I am now incorporating this into my repertoire of media outlets.  I am amazed that so many individuals and companies are using this platform, I am not too familiar with it but I’m excited to learn more!

  1. It is interesting to me that you wrote about how companies are starting to use Twitter (Aids.gov, 2013). I agree with you. I worked in a social media management internship while studying for my undergraduate degree. That was my first time really using Twitter, and it was for a business, so I learned to use it differently than if it was for personal use. I found that it was surprising how many people actually looked at the company’s Twitter account. The company that I worked for even received leads from people contacting the company through Twitter, so it was a powerful tool for them. Because of that, it is a good social media tool to learn how to use (Aids.gov, 2013).

  2. Rebecca,

In just a few years, the social media tools you cited; Facebook and Twitter have been incorporated into businesses as part of the customer engagement process. I agree with you because I see it in my everyday work. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has recently made great strides in engaging the public as a government agency by creating Facebook and Twitter accounts in order to give people real time updates during disasters as well as dispersing information about preparedness and recovery efforts. I posted the link to the Facebook page below:

  3. Hi Becky-
You mention that a lot of companies are starting to use Twitter - I currently work at a bank and we are actually finding it challenging to use Twitter. Our advertising is highly regulated by federal compliance, so we find that it would be difficult for use to put all the words we need into 140 characters. Twitter is a great way to catch users’ attention with taglines and hashtags, but I think the tweet sometimes needs to be linked to place where there is more content, such as a company’s website or blog, in order to be the most successful.

  4. Hi Becky,
The company that I work for has recently in the last few years expanded their media presence into social media. I work for a utility company and Facebook and Twitter are great outlets for us when our customers are experiencing outages and would like to be kept up to date with the causes and progress. We use links to maps and our website to report outages and it seems to be working well for our company in outage systems.
