Best Practices for Blogging

Lara White has created a blog entitled, PhotoMint: The Business of Photography.  This photography business of her’s has become very successful in large part due to her online blog.  What makes this blog an intriguing and highly viewed site is her attention to create an outlet for viewers to learn and engage in her blogs.  For instance, one of her blog posts, entitled, “3 Steps to Rocking Your Portrait Sales,” is succinct, detailed and attractive to the eye.  She includes proficient detailed information and advice in a short, to-the-point style of writing in her step-by-step teaching style.  Photos highlight each step of the process, proving to her audience that she is talented and experienced at the word in which she conveys to her readers.  She establishes viability in her posts through the rest of her website as well.

What makes this blog a successful one is the fact that White has given her viewers an avenue to learn from her work and experience her work for themselves. She promotes her company and photography through this online blog and website, featuring her best work while showing her audience that she cares about their interests and desires as well. Her blogs include links to other resources for photography, including equipment and networking opportunities.  White has targeted an audience that would be interested in her blog and products and has found best practice to make sure that this is a well-functioning and effective blog.

  1. You made an excellent point about blogs. They offer readers the opportunity to view work and writings from someone who has experience that the reader may not have. The blog that you wrote about is a good example of this. Do you think that her blog would be as successful if she just posted her own work and did not give advice to others? Do you think that inviting others to learn from a person’s experience is a best practice that every blog should use? It definitely is a way to get an audience to want to read a blog because free advice from someone who has experience is a motivating force. Perhaps with that in mind, it should be a best practice for bloggers to consider using.

After looking over the blog that I chose, I noticed that this blogger also sells her products on her blog, so her practice on her blog is very similar to the one that you wrote about (Adams, 2012). Amy also uses her blog to help others learn new information, but has an area that shows off her talent and that gains her customers (Adams, 2012).

  2. I think the blog you chose is a great example of a creator not only trying to demonstrate her expertise to potential clients in order to build her business, but also providing education to others who have an interest in photography. By sharing her experiences, she is helping to spread her knowledge to others, something that I think other artists and creators may have been loathe to do before the advent of the Internet and new media.
